Cattaraugus County New York Obituary Scrapbook - Submitted by Pam Davis
MRS. ELVIRA MASON:  MRS ELVIRA CHEESEMAN MASON was born at Lerayville, Jefferson County, N.Y., June 23, 1817, the third of eleven children.  Her father was ABNER CHEESEMAN, a farmer, for many years a resident of the town of Freedom.  He was a son of ANSON CHEESEMAN, who served throughout the Revolutionary War, a lineal descendant of ANSON CHEESEMAN who left England for America in time of the persecution of the Protestants.  Her mother was NANCY BALL, a daughter of NATHANEL BALL, also a Revolutionary patriot and soldier, a brother of COL. BALL of New Jersey.  On her mother’s side she was descended from a family of pious and intellectual Huguenots named SALEE  who came to America as the refuge for persecuted and afflicted Christians.  Her parents lived at Alexandria, N.Y., until her 12th year.  It was here that she gained most of her education and where she manifested ability of a high degree so early in her life.  At ten years of age she could recite Lindley Murray’s Grammar, the entire book without a single mistake.  At one time a prize was offered in her Sunday school for the highest number of verses recited.  She did not gain the prize for another girl gave a few more verses; her number being 78.  She had through life a remarkable memory.  To the last day of her life she could and did recall and state events accurately both in regard to recent and former happenings.  In 1829 her father moved to Rutland, N.Y, where were formed some of the happiest associations and friendships of her life.  In March 1834 he came with his family to Freedom, Cattaraugus County, N.Y.  They moved in wagons and occupied two weeks in the journey through northern and central New York.  She taught two terms of district school in her own town.  April 22, 1841 she was married to MR. JOHN MASON.  For several years they resided in Franklinville, Farmersville, and Yorkshire Center.  In 1852 they moved to Shongo, and the next year to Springs Mills, Allegany County.  They lived there nine years.  There were six children, four sons and two daughters.  In 1862, MR. MASON moved to Beaverdam, Pa., where the youngest daughter was given up to death at less than seven years.  The two oldest sons, one at twenty and the younger at the age of 15 ½ years, enlisted and served three years in the Civil War.  The older was a member of Co. E, 130 N.Y.S.Vols., afterwards the famous First N.Y. Dragoons, and the younger was also a private in the Twelfth Pa., Cav., afterwards in the 1st Ill. Light Artillery.  Both came home invalids from toil and privations endured for their country’s glory.  In 1864 MRS. MASON  joined the Presbyterian Church at Beaverdam and on removal the following year to Edinboro, Pa., resumed membership in the First Presby. Church in that town.  In 1872 the family returned to this town where they have since held a residence.  Her last sickness was a  brief duration.  She leaves a daughter and two sons.  The funeral services took place at her late home on Saturday at one o’clock, REV. W. B. ROBINSON of the M.E. Church officiating.  The interment was in Mapledale cemetery.

Francis Beckwith

In the 1830 Census for New Hartford, NY Francis Jr. is between the age of 20 and 30.  His wife is between the age of 20 and 30.  He has two sons between the ages of 5 and 10 and a daughter under the age of 5.

In the 1840 Census for Westmoreland, Oneida, NY Francis is living in Westmoreland and is between the age of 30 and 40.  His wife is between the ages of 30 and 40.  He has one son under the age of 5 and one between the age of 15 and 20.

In the 1850 Census for Westmoreland, Oneida, NY Francis is living by himself at the age of 46 and is a farmer.  He lives next to his sister, Deborah Curtis, and her family.

Jacob E. Beachner Sr.

August 16, 1850 - Jacob Büchner, age 42, arrives in New York on the ship Bark Orion from Bremen, Germany.  He is listed as a carpenter with last residence in Oberfüllbach and born in Sachsen.  He is with what looks to be a sibling Anna (age 28), and children Georg (18), Michel (13), Johann (9), Dorothea (6), Barbe (4), and Anna (9m).  The ship left Bremen on 22 June 1850.  The record was found on http://immigrantships.net.  These records can be found in the National Archives on Microfilm publication 237/roll 91.

1853 Son William Henry's obituary states that he was born in Penfield, NY. So, the family most likely settled in Penfield, NY after arriving from Germany.

1855 Penfield, Monroe, NY Census: Jacob and wife Barbra both born in Germany, with children Barbra (age 8 born Ger.), Hannah (age 5 born Ger.), Charles (age 4 born Monroe Co, NY), and Wm (age 2 born Monroe Co).  He is not listed as owning land so he may have been renting.  All born in Germany were marked as aliens.  All above age 4 were also listed as having been in Penfield for 4 years.  So, it looks as if they did not spend too much time in New York City when they arrived to the U.S. in 1850. Families around the Beachners were Elezer Baker, Richard Wells, Charles Fellows, L. Allen, and Nathan Higbie.  Most of these men are found on 1852 and 1858 maps of Penfield, NY around what is now Fellows Road, Penfield, NY.

1860 US Fed Census: living with second wife Barbara and children Hannah (probably Anna as listed on ship records), Charles, William, Franklin, Sarah & unnamed (Jacob - age 1/12) in Weller, Richland, Ohio. Listed as a Farmer.

The 1860 census listing above has his last name spelled as Bickler so either they changed their name after settling in or the census is mistaken which is all too common.  Also, Jacob's and Barbara's ages vary quite significantly throughout the census records so they could have been just reluctant to give totally accurate information to the census takers.  The unnamed child must be Jacob E. who was born just 8 days before the census record of 23 Jun 1860.

1870 US Fed Census: living with wife Barbara and children Sarah and Jacob in Blooming Grove, Ohio.  Listed as Day Laborer

1870 Assessment of Lots in the Town of Ganges, Richland County, Ohio, for the year 1870: Beachner, Barbary had lot 28 worth $25 with a house worth $75 and lot 1 worth $25 with a house worth $100.  Beachner, Jacob had lots 51-54 each worth $25 and lot 6 worth $25.

Obituary as found in the Rochester Union & Advertiser, 1 April 1889 (Rochester, NY):
(source: Barb Heiden)
Jacob Beachner, aged 80 years, died yesterday at his home in Irondequoit. The funeral will take place from the house at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.

Note: It looks as if Jacob came back to Irondequoit, NY to be with his siblings in his later years.  I have learned that the Hooker Cemetery in Irondequoit, NY was the only public cemetery in Irondequoit up to 1895.  Many of the tombstones have been ruined in this cemetery over the years.  I'm wondering if he is buried in this cemetery.  Monroe County and New York state do not have any records of his death.

Charles B. Beachner

1855 Penfield, Monroe County Census: living with parents Jacob and Barbara. Listed as age 4 born in Monroe County.

1860 US Fed Census: living with second parents Jacob and Barbara and siblings Hannah (probably Anna as listed on ship records), William, Franklin, Sarah & unnamed (Jacob - age 1/12) in Weller, Richland, Ohio.

1870 US Fed Census: ???

1877 Rochester, NY Directory: Beachner, Charles C. book agent bds 97 1/2 E. Main (not sure if the 'C.' was a typo in the directory)

1880 Rochester, NY Directory: Beachner, Charles B. salesman b. 169 E. Main

1880 Fed Census:  Rochester, NY 169 E. Main - Beachner, Charles B., boarder, travelling agent, born Ohio

1881 Rochester, NY Directory: Beachner, Charles B. boards Litster House

1882 Rochester, NY Directory: Beachner, Charles B. died Oct 20, 1881

His death certificate may or may not be available, I believe the cutoff date was somewhere in 1881 for NY state death certificates.

Franklin Beachner

Since Franklin was not mentioned in two obituaries of his siblings I am assuming he died prior to his brother William's death in 1913.  He was about 15 during the 1870 census and he is not listed with his family.  Therefore he may have died prior to 1870 instead.  Also, his birth is listed as being in New York but it must have been after the 1855 Penfield, NY census because he is not listed with the family in 1855.

Sarah Beachner

Residence at time of brother Jacob's death (1915) was Saginaw, Michigan according to Jacob's obituary.

1920 US Census: living with son Ross in Saginaw, MI and his family at 601 Bundy St. Her son Clarence and daughter Alveretta are also with her.

See notes under husband Jacob P. Brasser for 1880-1920 census info.
1930 US Census: Living alone at her home at 1569 Ridge Road, Irondequoit, NY.  She is 80 yrs old and widowed. She and her parents are listed as being born in Coburg, Germany.

Notes: Randy Beachner, remembers being told about the farm on Ridge Road in Irondequoit and the name Bell.  Bell is the married name of Jacob and Margaret's daughter Olive.
