What do commissioners do?
Basically, commissioners oversee the general operation of the GVFPD in terms
of both physical assets and staff. All GVFPD staff reports to the commissioners
and the commissioners also act as liason between the public and staff.
Commissioners may or may not have an understanding of the technical underpinnings
of fire fighting science but must be comfortable in handling interactions
with the public, the GVFPD staff, and volunteers. Commissioners also exercise
fiduciary oversight of the GVFPD. The chief helps, big time, in this effort
as well and all parties are responsible for the prudent disbursement of
taxpayer funds, grants, and other sources of income.
In concert with the Fire Chief, the commissioners take part in formulating
the long-term, strategic mission of the GVFPD. The Fire Chief also handles
day-to-day tactical decision-making that is regularly reviewed by the commissioners.
The commissioners meet formally with the staff once a month at the fire
house. Occasionally, other workshops take place as well.
Alternate Commissioners provide
input just as "regular" commissioners
do; however, they do not vote unless one or more of the regular commissioners
is absent at the monthly meeting.
Commissioners, regardless of whether they are Alternates or not, should
plan on attending the once-a-month meeting.
