Resurfacing Luce Line Trail

New limestone on the first 20 miles of trail

April 22, 2004

Resurfacing of the first 20 miles of the Luce Line Trail, from Vicksburg Lane in Plymouth to Watertown, is set to begin.

Within the next two weeks construction crews will begin resurfacing the trail's main treadway with a new crushed limestone surface.

The resurfacing will be done in three phases, with the initial phase starting at Vicksburg Lane, then working west. Sections of the trail will be closed at times due to this construction, and users should be aware that they will encounter closures. The targeted completion date for the entire 20 miles is Aug. 31.

Another construction project involves the removal and ultimate replacement of the Burlington Northern Bridge, just west of Hwy. 12. Contractors plan to close that section of trail April 26 to begin the removal, salvage and restoration of the old historic truss bridge, and subsequent construction of a new longer span bridge in that location. The new bridge will be constructed to accommodate the new Hwy. 12 corridor that will be built there. The trail is expected to be closed in this area until at least the middle of September.

For updates on status of the construction as it relates to the trail, users may contact DNR Area Trails and Waterways Supervisor Martha Reger at (952) 826-6769.
