OBJECTIVES:

Course description, objectives and general information.


Note: this is in an intermediate level computer course. Basic computer instruction is not part of this class. As a second year design course, each student is expected to apply basic design concepts within the development of each project. Production and craftsmanship skills are fundamental in the presentation of each final solution.

If you do not have the fundamental skills for the work assigned, you will need to drop this class and take the appropriate beginning level courses. You will be graded on craftsmanship and presentation in addition to your work with type. If you are one of the few students that are taking this course simultaneously with GRDS 276/Intro to Comp Apps., it will be up to you to put in the necessary extra effort in the beginning of this course in order to accomplish the assignments.


Course Objectives
1. To acquaint the student with the following areas of typography:
  • The history, structure & usage's of letter forms,
  • Use of text as a visual element, and
  • Beginning overview of long document construction.
2. To introduce the student to a variety of design situations that a type solution might be the correct solution.
3. To introduce students to professional layout software and work on an intermediate level with various graphic software, such as Illustrator & PhotoShop.

• Visual Quickstart for Quark 4, Elaine Weinmann
