We received 4 bear cubs yesterday and needed to move them into a holding area in the Wild and Free building. Before we could put them in their new temporary quarters we had to remove and release its occupant, a Great Horned Owl. After Rachael brought the bird outside she helped Becky get the proper grip on it so neither she nor the bird would be injured.

She raised her arms up in the air, the owl spread its wings, and Becky let go of it. (photo by Justin Jordan)

Apparently the owl didn't want to go the way it was pointed so it made an immediate turn and came back the other way. (photo by Justin Jordan)

As you can see, Becky wasn't sure she wanted to be in the way of a freshly released Great Horned Owl.

The owl was only interested in getting into the trees as quickly as possible and kept on going. It was soon out of sight.

We also had a rehabilitated pigeon that was ready to be released so Rachael brought it out and Justin had the privilege of setting it free. This bird is a little easier to handle.

With a little boost from Justin it was on its way.

That's another successful release.
