The Andersons:

Chapter 8

A few weeks later Denise sent them an updated POA to sign.  Their original POA had been signed in May 2003 when they accepted Audrey’s referral.  Denise said the May 2003 POA had Mr. Rosales’s name misspelled.

There is a strange Sept. 3, 2003 date at the top of the POA, along with the May 5, 2003 date. The Andersons felt there was something not quite right about those two different dates being on the same document.

In addition, it purports to have been notarized by Sandra Harding, yet has no traces of a notary’s stamp or signature, quite against the legal standards for notarization. Perhaps Denise was trying to cover herself on something, because that wouldn’t have held up in court as proof of authenticity.

Roxann, Mr. Rosales assistant, told the Andersons that the three months their paperwork had been out of PGN was directly Denise Hubbard’s fault.  She said Denise had typed Mr. Rosales name wrong on purpose on the POA.  It had taken far too long to get the documents back to Guatemala to resubmit them.

The same day Denise informed them they needed to re-sign the POA, Denise maliciously twisted the knife she had placed in Gina’s heart.  She told Gina Audrey’s birth mother had given birth to a baby girl, fully knowing Gina had always wanted to parent two girls. Gina was devastated.  There was no need for Denise to have done this to Gina.

Here’s the problem. The baby wasn’t due until June. If the birth mother had indeed given birth, this baby would have been three months premature. The Andersons later learned first hand that the woman gave birth on July 2 to a baby boy.

    Nice try Denise.

They were going to take matters into their own hands and get real help with Audrey’s adoption.  They learned their file was placed back into PGN on April 29, only to be kicked out again on May 4.

Communications with Denise stalled.  She began pulling the non-communication, non-response tactic she had in December.  The Andersons were forced into contact with Denise Hubbard’s new “Administrative Assistant” Kelly Carter Hubbard.

When we wrote this in September 2004, Kelly’s name was shown on BBAS’s website with the following caption as Kelly Carter:

Administrative Assistant, is a mother of a beautiful daughter and an adoptive aunt. Kelly has many years of experience as an administrative assistant and provides structure, organization and consistency to our office structure. If you need dossier assistance please feel free to call the office and ask for Kelly. Kelly has traveled overseas and has seen first hand how beneficial it is to bring children together with families.

Being a “mother of a beautiful daughter” and “adoptive aunt” does not automatically qualify this person to work at an adoption agency.  Nor does it qualify her for “dossier assistance.”

Well, guess what.  Somebody must have complained for in November 2004, right as we were placing the Andersons’ story on the website, Kelly’s name miraculously appeared as: Kelly Carter-Hubbard.  Amazing!  Truly amazing!

However, why had Kelly Hubbard hidden her true family affiliation on the Internet for so long?  We learned there is a Kelly and Michael Hubbard living in Medina, Ohio. Is this Michael Hubbard, Gary’s brother?

In email correspondence with the Andersons, Kelly continuously signed her name Kelly Carter.

From documents obtained from the ODJFS on BBAS 2004 re-certification, a Kelly Hubbard joined the BBAS family (increasingly synonymous with the extended Hubbard-Marco family in any event).  There was nothing about a Kelly Carter.

Andrew Anderson confirmed that.  During one office visit to BBAS offices, he noticed that Kelly’s name plate on her desk read KELLY HUBBARD.  There was no evidence of a KELLY CARTER working for the agency.

Have things gotten so bad at BBAS all Denise can do is hire her unqualified family members?  Doesn’t anybody in Medina and its environs want to work at BBAS?  What do the people of Medina know that Denise and Gary Hubbard’s extended family don’t? For some clients, Kelly Carter-Hubbard was a true source of helpfulness and information.  For others, she came across as yet another useless proxy for her sister-in-law.(Kelly Carter-Hubbard was to last until February 2008.  We do not know the reasons as to why she left, was fired or quit. Either way, no great loss to the greater adoption community).

Either way you look at it, it’s deceptive.  And the Andersons had to rely on the uninformed, unqualified sister-in-law of Denise Lynn Harding Hubbard for their updates.

When they did not get any updates on their case, the learned in mid-May Denise was in Guatemala and they again had not been informed.  Kelly Hubbard emailed the Andersons photos of their baby, looking exceedingly healthy and developmentally on target.  It was of little consolation for on May 18 Richard J. Marco, Jr. was summoned and ready to enter Stage Right.
