Preparing a quilt and backing for Machine Quilting:

1.The backing and batting you supply must be 4 inches larger ON EVERY SIDE than your quilt top. Some fabric may be lost when I square the backing. This rule is one that makes it easier to make your quilt look its best!

2. Make sure all seams and stitches are secure. Make sure all seams that meet the outside edge are secure (seams that come right to the edge of the quilt top). However, a completed top should not be stay stitched around its entire outside edge.

3. Mark the top of your quilt top with a pin if it is not obvious. No other pins, please.

4. Trim all EXCESS THREADS, front and back.

5. Please REMOVE SELVEDGES before or after you piece the backing. BACKING SEAMS WORK VERY WELL ON A QUILTING MACHINE IF THEY ARE HORIZONTAL. A vertical seam can be made with a tiny zigzag to allow it to move with the quilt top, however, I will deal with whatever you bring me.

6. Quilt top should lie flat and squared.

7. Bobbin thread you or I choose should be the same color as the thread used on the top of the quilt. Using different colors may show through on the backing. Printed backings or backings the same color as the thread are the best choices.

8. PRESS your quilt while piecing and before you bring it to me. Press your backing, too.

9. Backing should be all-cotton for the best finish, however, I will use whatever you bring me. Sheets are dense and not recommended, however, again, I will use them. Poly backings stretch and may cause puckers.

10. If you want curved corners or scalloped edges, please wait to cut the curves after the quilting is finished.
