Fort Dodge Prison Application Proposal

Spiritual Component

1. The Christian religious community from the Fort Dodge area will provide an ordained pastor to serve as a volunteer to provide worship services, counseling, Bible study, and fellowship with visitors from the community outside the prison.
 a. The prison pastor would be in addition to a chaplain and/or religious coordinator provided by the State of Iowa.
 b. The prison pastor would be an educated, trained, and experienced parish pastor who would act as an additional caregiver in the institution.
 c. The prison pastor would provide an additional worship opportunity and worship style for the prison community.
 d. The prison pastor would be supported by, and form a partnership with, a consortium of "outside" congregations whose members would be invited inside regularly to worship, study and fellowship with the inmates. This would provide emotional and spiritual support to the inmates who participate.
 e. This connection with "outside" congregations often results in post-release "aftercare" assistance by these outside volunteers for inmates re-entering society.

2. A Match-Two (M-2) program will be organized which will match inmates one-on-one with persons from the surrounding communities.
 a. The Match-Two program is an existing program of Lutheran Social Services of Iowa and has been proven over a period of time to be an effective instrument to bring inmates and persons from the outside together.
 b. M-2 "Matches Two" as friends. Volunteers from the outside community are matched on a one-to-one basis with inmates who are also volunteers for the program
 c. The outside volunteers, called "sponsors," commit themselves to make regular visits with their match for one year. They visit to cultivate a friendly relationship conducive to mutual growth and change.
 d. The Match-Two program will be introduced through the Fort Dodge Area Inter-Faith Forum to congregations of all denominations in the area.
 e. Outside volunteers are oriented and trained, and then they are matched with inmates.
 f. This connection with "outside" congregations often results in post-release "aftercare" assistance by these outside volunteers for inmates re-entering society.
