Register now for Outland Challenge Triathlon

The second Annual Outland Challenge Triathlon will be held at Lake Cochrane State Park on Sunday, Aug. 26., and registration for competitors is now open, announbced Outland’s Steve Scott.

The triathlon’s three events are a 400-yard swim, a 15.5-mile bike ride, and a 4.4-mile run. The Challenge is sanctioned by USA Triathlon.

New to this year’s event is a team competition. Participants will compete alongside the region’s most seasoned triathletes. The top finishers of each division — men, women, team — will share in $1,000 in cash prizes. One hundred-percent of the event’s profits are divided and distributed to local charities, Scott said..

To register and learn more about the event go to: www.outlandchallenge.org or www.facebook.com/theoutlandchallenge.

For those new to the event or the area, Lake Cochrane State Park is an 88-acre park that features 30 camp sites, modern restrooms, showers, and a natural sand beach. Lake Cochrane is surrounded by wide-open, rolling prairie crossed by streams and oak-covered draws. Scott said volunteers are also being sought to help with the event. He said those interested in volunteering can contact staff at info@outlandchallenge.org.

The triathlon is sponsored by Outland Energy Services, which provides operations and maintenance services to wind energy facilities throughout the United States and abroad.

Founded in 2005, Outland has more than 125 employees. The company maintains its North American headquarters in Canby and has additional offices in Mendota Heights and Guymon, Okla.

Wrestling

There’s wrestling and then there’s wrestling. Saturday, Canby had it all from kids to college, which was a matchup with extra special ties when the No. 1 ranked St. Cloud State team faced Southwest Minnesota State in the Canby High gym. The crowd was waiting for the 174 pound match and roared to its feet what Tad Merritt stepped onto the floor for St. Cloud State. Merritt is a three-time collegiate All-American and a former two-time state champion for the Lancers, who returned to home turf under the special arrangements made for the wrestling extravaganza.

Seniority discussed

Parent-Teacher Conferences and teacher seniority were items brought up for discussion at the latest meeting of the Canby School Board. Principal Robert Slaba reported that the second semester is already under way, and that students have already begun registering for classes for the 2012-2013 school year. Also, to the chagrin of students, and perhaps teachers as well, Slaba reported that due to the unseasonably warm and dry winter we have been having, there have been no snow days so far this year.
