EXT. A QUIET FOREST - DAY (story in progress)

Tracy backs closer to her camera.(The real camera is directly behind her camera)

TRACY (cont’d)

(quietly) Come to mommy!

Suddenly a huge fur-covered thing violently throws her out of the shot. She only manages a brief scream.

The camera zooms in on her camcorder’s eyepiece.

MATCH CUT TO:

INT. A POLICE STATION - DAY

The shot focuses on a television screen where Tracy’s footage of the nest continues.

The shot widens to reveal three people watching the footage.

Officer Bruce Grainer, an older man, reaches over to a VCR and presses rewind.

Officer Kelly Thomas, a younger woman, sits next to Steve Curtis, a ruggedly handsome twenty two year old man.

KELLY

(to Steve) We found her stuff this morning near Fender’s Ridge. We’re thinking it’s been there for at least three days.

STEVE

You think she’s still alive?

OFFICER GRAINER

It’s all just a bit too suspicious. Other than the video tape, there is absolutely no sign of a struggle.

Officer Grainer freeze frames the VCR as the "beast" is mid-shot.

OFFICER GRAINER (cont’d)

(pointing to the television) And if that was an animal, there’d be blood all over the place!

KELLY

This is a bit too close to a "Blair Witch" rip-off. We think she’s trying to get the community all worked up.

STEVE

What does this have to do with me?

OFFICER GRAINER

Steve, you know that area better than anybody I know and...

STEVE

(cutting him off) That may be but I don’t work here anymore!

OFFICER GRAINER

God Damn it! I had no choice in that matter!

STEVE

(heated) Ya coulda defended me, Grainer!

OFFICER GRAINER

(also heated) It wouldn’ta mattered!

STEVE

(yelling) It would have mattered to me!

OFFICER GRAINER

(yelling) Listen smart ass! You made a stupid...

STEVE

(cutting him off) No! You listen! I grew up here, what was I supposed to do?!

Officer Grainer turns away. Tensions are high. Kelly jumps in.

KELLY

(yelling) We don’t have time for this!

Officer Grainer turns back. He regains his composure.

OFFICER GRAINER

(calming) Kelly’s right. Steve, we need your help.

STEVE

(also calming but still mad) Who’s the girl?

KELLY

Her name’s Tracy Reynolds.

OFFICER GRAINER

And if little Tracy’s calling wolf, she’s gonna to be in a heap a trouble!

KELLY

Not to mention, trespassing on government property.

STEVE

And let me guess, Daddy is some kinda big-wig and he wants this quiet?

OFFICER GRAINER

Exactly.

Steve gets up to leave.

STEVE

Can I have my gun back?

Officer Grainer angrily puts his hands on his hips. Steve doesn’t push it.

STEVE

I’ll round up some boys and see what I can find.

KELLY

Call us if you get anything.

Steve flashes Kelly a flirtatious wink before he exits.

KELLY

Bruce, isn’t that the part of the woods where Steve’s brother...

Kelly doesn’t need to continue, Officer Grainer shakes his head.

FADE TO:

EXT. BACK OF A HARDWARE STORE - Day (FIVE MINUTES LATER)

A truck pulls up and Steve jumps out. He scratches his head as he walks to the back door.

FADE TO:

INT. A HARDWARE STORE - DAY

Tom Janowski, another ruggedly handsome younger man, works behind a cash register. He hands a lady her purchases in a small brown bag.

TOM

...these should fit, but if they don’t you can bring em’ back, no problem.

LADY

Thank you.

Steve barges in.

STEVE

Hey Tom, how ya doin’?

TOM

Good as a red-assed baboon!

The lady flashes Tom a demeaning look.

TOM (cont’d)

(cockily to lady) Have a nice day.

The lady exits in a huff.

TOM (cont’d)

What’s up, my man?

STEVE

I’m gonna check out a missing person.

TOM

Missing person? You back on the force?

STEVE

Nothing official.

TOM

Who ya looking for.

STEVE

Some little honey.

TOM

From where?

STEVE

Illinois.

TOM

Ah, tourist!
