EXT. FRONT PORCH - DAY

It’s a beautiful sunny day in a completely average small town (or is it?).

TINA, a pretty young woman in her late twenties, rocks back and forth on the porch of her modest home. She sings along to an odd country tune that's playing on her headset while she snips beans into a kettle. She is totally engrossed in the task.

Unbeknownst to TINA, a rotting festering CORPSE of a man shambles through the bushes.

TINA continues working.

The CORPSE flops over the rail and onto the porch behind TINA. Slowly the beast begins it’s menacing crawl. Muck and rotting sludge follow the creature.

TINA happily continues working as the CORPSE rises behind her.

Damn it TINA! Wake up!

Suddenly the CORPSE grabs TINA’s head from behind and covers her eyes with it’s crusty claws.

TINA screams and tries to escape. This is it for her!

CORPSE

Guess who?

TINA calms.

TINA

Oh let me see... John? No wait... Neall?

CORPSE

Tina, you bitch!

The CORPSE releases TINA’s face and flops into a nearby chair.

TINA

(playfully) Randy?!

RANDY (FORMERLY CORPSE)

You knew it was me all along!

TINA

Oh I did, did I?

TINA slides over into RANDY’s lap. She wraps her arms around his neck and kisses him. TINA doesn’t see the rotted shell before her. She sees RANDY as the handsome young man he once was.

TINA turns her attention toward the camera (us, the audience).

TINA (cont’d)

Well, I reccon this all seems a bit queer... maybe I should ‘splain, there’s a thing-or two you need to be knowin’ about our little town...

EXT. A FOREST CLEARING (1864) - DAY

A weather beaten TRAPPER covered in furs staggers through a thicket of branches. A tired horse follows.

*TECH NOTE - A brown tint or filter over black and white footage could be used to indicate an earlier time frame.

TINA (Voice Over)

...as we hear it told, our town was founded around 1864 by a man with the name a’ Silas Hickem.

The TRAPPER spills the last few drops of a whiskey bottle down his throat then pulls a bizarre device from the pack on his horse. This strange device unfolds like a brass octopus as the TRAPPER veers through it’s measured arms.

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

It seems ole Silas was a bit of an eccentric, that mean's ta say he did some wacky kinds-a things.

The TRAPPER is using his device to locate something.

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

But I ain’t sure ‘wacky’ right describes what he was a lookin’ for! That old man weren’t right in the head.

The TRAPPER rubs his eyes into focus and stares through his device. What’s that up ahead? Could it be what he is seeking? He realizes it’s nothing as he sadly continues on his way.

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

That darn fool convinced his-self he could find a chunk of the moon, some old Indian legend or whatnot, even had some weird do-hicky to help him out.

As the TRAPPER enters a beautiful clearing, he is engulfed by an odd warm light. At last, he has found it! He kisses the device and heads toward the light.

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

Funny thing is... he found it! A whole fifteen pound slab! Or at least he thought he found it.

Light emits from the center of a burnt out crater as the TRAPPER slowly approaches. In awe he reaches into the hole and removes a glowing rock. He doesn’t drop the rock even though it slightly burns his fingertips. He smiles as he holds it close to his face.

INT. A GENERAL STORE (1867) - DAY

Beside the flour bags, the pickle barrel, and the cans of beans we see a crude display. It advertises, "SEE THE AMAZING MOON ROCK - JUST ONE PENNY! OWNED BY SILAS HICKEM".

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

He charged folks a penny-a-head to see that hunk-o-moon and that was a lotta money back then!

A SMALL BOY and his MOTHER walk to the display.

The TRAPPER brings up a metal box from behind his counter.

The MOTHER pays and the TRAPPER and the box is opened revealing the amazing moon rock inside. The SMALL BOY and his MOTHER are overwhelmed with the rock’s warm light.

SMALL BOY

That’s spiffy! Kin I touch it?

MOTHER

I don’t know, Billy.

The TRAPPER nods at the MOTHER allowing the SMALL BOY to touch the rock.

SMALL BOY

Gosh! It makes my fingers all numb!

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

They called the town Lunarville back then, cause of the moon stone. It’s lunar, right.

The TRAPPER closes the box.

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

One problem though, turns out that rock wasn’t a chunk of the moon like Silas Hickem though.

The SMALL BOY and his MOTHER exit.

The TRAPPER opens the box and takes out the rock. He places it down on the top of the display and stares at it.

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

It was a chunk of pure radium, plutonium, or some kind-a ee-um but whatever that stuff was it’s like a million times nastier than anything!

The TRAPPER looks at his fingers. They aren’t working very well.

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

And after a couple-a years-a toatin’ that rock around...

The TRAPPER stiffens and drops to the floor.

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

...ole Silas kicked off!

EXT. AN OLD DIRT ROAD (1867) - DAY

The SMALL BOY and his MOTHER are on their way home. The SMALL BOY is filled with wonder.

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

But strangely enough the rock never got that much attention...

SMALL BOY

(excited) And when I touched it, my fingers got all tingly!

MOTHER

(intrigued) I’ve never seen anything like it.

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

...cause anybody that had short term exposure...

SMALL BOY

(excited) I’m telling all my friends! Can we see it again sometime?

TINA (V.O. cont’d)

...forgot all about it as soon as they got a half mile away!

SMALL BOY

(excited) Huh? Can we see it again?

MOTHER

(confused) See what again dear?

SMALL BOY

(confused) Huh?

MOTHER

See what again?

SMALL BOY

(confused) I don’t know, mommy. I can’t remember?!
