Craig Knitt and Tom Thorne have been creating short film projects since they met in high school. Both are founders of the WildWood Film Festival and co-creators of the short lived "Out Of Whack Show" which played on a cable access channel in Appleton more than ten years ago. Thorne and Knitt teamed up with Jason Buss (the other founder) to created the feature film "The Hunt" which premiered as the show piece of the 2002 WildWood Film Festival in Green Bay.

"Johnny Thistle" was an idea that Thorne and Knitt had been toying with for well over ten years. It was to be Wisconsin's first entry into the Channel 101 market but was deemed by the creators as too 'cute' for the crazy world of 101. Future episodes of "Johnny Thistle" are in the works with special appearances by several historical figures.
