State Highpoint Quest

CT DE HI IN MA MD ME MO NH
NJ NY OH PA TN VA VT WV

Why seek out the highest point of a political boundry? The easiest answer is just because it's there! And it has often been an interesting challenge, if not to hike, then navigating the back roads to find the trailhead. Each one is different, and special, and gives an education to the local culture and history. It has also been a source of interesting pictures and stories. Enjoy.

Connecticut Mt. Frissell 2,380'

I'm standing in Massachusetts pointing to the high point of Connecticut below me. The summit of Mt. Frissell is 100 or so yds. up the trail in Massachusetts.

Delaware Ebright Azimuth 448'

The second lowest highpoint after Florida, technically in the trailer park across the street, we just took in the sign and then went out for pizza.

Indiana Hoosier Hill 1,257'

In what seems like flat farm country, a small patch of woods between fields has this hidden but very well kept mini-park.

Massachusetts Mount Greylock 3,487'

We stayed at Bascom Lodge, right at the summit, and met several AT through-hikers. Apparently the Lodge and the road to the summit is closed for repairs until 2009.

Maryland Backbone Mtn. 3,360

Access is from WV. You hike up an old jeep road 1.1 miles, and find the concrete maker on the state line, and then the small clearing on the ridge about 100 yards beyond.

Maine Katahdin 5,268'

This was an all-day hike starting from Roaring Brook Campground (1500'), climbing via the Chimney Pond trail and returning on the Knife-Edge and Helon-Taylor trails, about 10 miles. We were very thankful for the perfect weather that day.

Missouri Taum Sauk Mtn. 1,772'

Simply stroll the 100 yards of sidewalk from the parking lot and become Missouri's highest man.

Hawaii Mauna Kea 13,796'

coming soon Using Arnott Lodge's Adventure tour, we went from sea level to the summit in about 2 hours. There is a brief stop at the visitor center at 9000' to acclimate. At the summit, moving around is noticibly difficult from the lack of oxygen. We watched the sun set, and the pyramidal shadow of the mountain rise in the sea to the east.

New Hampshire Mt. Washington 6,288'

You can drive up it, take the Cog Railway, or hike it. We hiked, spending the night at Lakes of the Clouds Hut. Notorious for it's bad weather, we lucked out with moderate visibility and 30 mph winds. The summit pile gets crowded when the train pulls in, then the tourists unprepared for the chill head for the observation building.

New Jersey High Point 1,808'

High Point State Park is at the north end of the ridge that forces the Delaware River into a right turn southwest, becoming the PA-NJ border instead of the PA-NY border. We first saw the obelisk from I-84 ten miles away.

New York Mt. Marcy 5,344'

This is one you have to hike to, minimum 14 mile round-trip. We took a slightly longer way, hiking to the Flowed Lands and camping 2 nights, doing Marcy as a day trip from there.

Ohio Campbell Hill 1,549'

Located on the grounds of the Hi-Point Vocational School outside Bellefountaine. We were very suprised to see an expressway exit saying "Hi-Point", but later realized it refered to the school, not the point.

Pennsylvania Mt. Davis 3,213'

Amish country, southwestern PA. A desolate summit with several nearby hills almost the same height.

Tennessee Clingmans Dome 6,643'

On the Tennessee-North Carolina border, also on the Appalachian Trail. The spiral walkway to the tower preserves the summit ecology. No view the day we were there.

Virginia Mt. Rodgers 5,729'

We hiked from Greyson Highlands State Park, following the Appalachian Trail on a mostly grassy, open ridge with long views into Virginia and North Carolina. Unique and beautiful area. The summit is forested and reached by a 1/2 mile spur off the AT.

Vermont Mt. Mansfield 4,393'

Chris and I had been here 30-some years earlier when we each hiked the Long Trail, different years. This time we came up the west side from Underwood State Park.

You drive up a Forest Service road 10 miles, the summit tower is about 1/4 mile from the parking lot. No view the day we were there.
