But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtility, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye recieve another spirit, which ye have not recieved, or another gospel,.. (2 Corinthians 11:3,4)
Hopefully, we can agree that it is important to have a personal relationship
with the true Jesus. As it is written:
"And this is life eternal, that they may know thee, the only
true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." (John 17:3)
Would it be fair to assume that if a person has a radically wrong idea
of who Jesus is, then he probably doesn't know Him (which would mean, of
course that he doesn't have eternal life)? How can we really know Who the
real Jesus is then? Is it by feelings?
There is a way that seemeth right to a man, but the end thereof
are the ways of death. (Proverbs 14:12)
Feelings are too shaky. What about the scriptures?
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which
are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ
Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable
for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction and righteousness:
that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished...(2 Timothy 3:16)
Even Brigham Young gave this challenge.:
"I say to the whole world, recieve the truth, no matter who presents
it to you. Take up the Bible, compare the religion of Latter-day Saints
with it, and see if it will stand the test." (Journal of Discourses,
Volume 16, page 46)
So let's compare the L.D.S. concept of Jesus Christ with what we find
in the Bible.
Will it stand the test?
COMPARING THE L.D.S. JESUS WITH THE BIBLICAL JESUS
The question needs to be asked; "How can Jesus the creator, be a spirit-brother
of his own creation?
It's Impossible!!
2) Jesus was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. That would make him the son of the Holy Ghost. He was literally the Son of God. The Father ( who had a body of flesh and bones) had a sexual relationship with Mary. (see The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, Bookcraft, p. 7.)
In the first place, the Holy Ghost is God ( compare Acts 5:3 with 5:4
and 1 Corinthians 3:16 with 6:19). The Bible declares:
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost
shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:
therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called
the Son of God (Luke 1:35 Even see Alma 7:10 in the Book
of Mormon.)
Ezra Taft Benson declared the L.D.S. Church "... proclaims that Jesus Christ is the Son of God in the most literal sense." He said "The body... was sired by ... God, our Eternal Father." (loc. cit.) But Mary is supposed to be one of the Father's "spirit-children," so wouldn't his sexual relationship with her be incestuous? Also, how could Jesus be born of a "virgin" (Matthew 1:23). when this fleshly "Father" supposedly sired him? (see John 4:24, Luke 24:39).
3) Jesus sweated for our sins in the garden of Gethsemane "...when he conditionally took upon himself the sins of the world,..." (see What the Mormons think of Christ, L.D.S. Church booklet, p.31)
But Jesus didn't sweat for sins in the garden of Gethsemane, He died
for our sins upon the cross. He could have sweat blood and never died and
there would have been no atonement. As it was he shed (not sweat) His blood
unto death, thus becoming a sacrifice for sins. This payment for our sin
was accomplished once. This is clear from various passages in the Bible:
And having made peace through the blood of his cross,... (Colossians
1:20)
...how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; (1 Corinthians 15:3)
the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (1 John 1:7)
...one sacrifice for sins forever (Hebrews 10:12)
by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified (Hebrews 10:14)
4) Jesus is only part of the way, but self-effort through L.D.S. laws and ordinaces provides the rest of the way of salvation (see Third Article of Faith). "Christians speak often of the blood of Christ and its cleansing power. Much that is believed and taught on the subject, however is such utter nonsense and so palably false that to believe it is to lose one's salvation. ...if we confess Christ with our lips and avow that we accept him as our personal Savior, we are thereby saved. His blood, without other act than mere belief, they say, makes us clean." (What the Mormons think of Christ, p. 31)
The Bible sheds quite a bit of light on this important topic:
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way the truth and the life: no man
cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)
"Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins..." (Romans 3:24,25)
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus Christ and shalt believe in thy heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9)
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8,9)
5) Jesus was a man who became a God by obedience to the laws of eternal progression, just as we too, can become Gods. (What the Mormons think of Christ, p. 36, Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pps. 346, 347)
But instead of a Jesus who progressed from man to God, the Bible tells
us that He is God the Word Who became the God-man.:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. (John 1:1)
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (John 1:14)
...even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God (Psalm 90:2)
Can we become Gods? Notice that God said:
...before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after
me. (Isiah 43:10)
I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: (Isiah 45:5)
The law of eternal progression is not a law but an illusion. God is not just God of this earth. He owns it all (see Dueteronomy 10:14)
6) Jesus is Jehovah, a totally separate God from the Father, who is Elohim (see Uniform System for Teaching Families, p. C-1 and Articles of Faith, pps. 466, 467). They are only one in purpose.
If this is true, why does Duet 6:4 literally read:
Hear Israel, YHWH our Elohim, YHWH one.
(YHWH="Jehovah" Notice it says Jehovah our Elohim.)
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: (Dueteronomy 6:4)
Other verses create problems for the L.D.S. concept of Jesus:
...he that hath seen me hath seen the Father;... (John 14:9)
Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?... the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me...(John 14:10,11)
Who is the image of the invisible God,...(Colossians 1:15)
If the Father and the Son both had bodies of flesh and bone(D. & C. 130:22), then you would have one body inside the skin of another body. Oddly enough even the Book of Mormon teaches they are one God (2Nephi 31:21, Mosiah 15:4,5 and Alma 11:44).
Can the Mormon Jesus save you?
The answer must be "NO",
because as you have been shown from the scriptures, he simply does not
exist. The real Jesus however, loves you very much and is offering you
eternal life through faith in Him. Won't you humble yourself and turn to
Him right now, giving up all your striving to earn righteousness? Let Him
credit righteousness to your account through faith in His blood, confessind
the true Lord Jesus and trusting in your heart that God raised Him (Romans
3:25, 10:3,4,9).
