Saratoga Battlefield Monument

Saratoga Battlefield Monument

The Saratoga Battlefield Monument was built to commemorate the American victory in the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, and the surrender of British General Burgoyne.

Construction was started in 1877 on the monument, which is over 154 feet tall. On the outside of the monument, are statues of three of the four leaders of the American victory. These leaders were General Horatio Gates, General Philip Schuyler, and Colonel Daniel Morgan. There is one statue on each of three sides of the four-sided monument.

There is an empty space on the fourth side of the monument, where a statue would be located. This space, for General Benedict Arnold, remains empty, because he became a traitor after the battle. Arnold was wounded during the Battle of Saratoga; ironically, had he died from his wounds, he would have been remembered as a leader in the American victory.

The interior of the monument was closed for many years. It was restored, inside and out, beginning in 1999, and was reopened to the public in May 2002.
