38-Tournament - Rounds One and Two

Tournament Results

(22 June 1998) It is my pleasure to announce the winners of the 38 Challenge Chess Variant Tournament. Congratulations to Ben Good, who won 5 out of the 6 games he played. Ben will receive a "38 Tournament" T-Shirt proclaiming him as the 38 tournament champion.

Congratulations also to Hans Bodlaender, who won 4 out of the 5 games he played. Hans will also receive a "38 Tournament" T-Shirt proclaiming him as the second place winner.

I'd like to thank all the players for participating in the tournament. I hope everyone had some fun and also learned from the experience too.

How the games were chosen

The highest priority was given to player preferences for which variants they wanted to play. After that, I tried to assign games designed by participants. Another consideration was to have as many variants as possible be played. The games I chose, other than the player preferences and player designed ones, were chosen at random.

The table below shows the games assignments, who plays white, and will show the outcome of the games also. Note that the standard version of the variant is assumed, unless the players agree beforehand to play a certain variant of the variant.

If anyone does not have access to a table aware browser, please let me know, and I will either email you the table in text format, or put a text formatted table on this page. Note: please look at the bottom of this page for a plain text version of the game assignments.

I will be determining the games and match-ups for round two while round one is being played. During that time players will have a chance to change their preferences as to which variants they would like to play (for round two).
