HABITAT NEWSLETTER ARTICLES AND INFO

This was the moment we all were waiting for.  When the Bradley family cut the ribbon and received the keys to their new home.  This all took place on Sunday June 14th at 2:00.  There were over fifty in attendance to show their support to this family and to the Habitat Program here in Wyoming County.  This home is located on Route 238 in the town of Orangeville and is the third build for Habitat in the county.  Special guest speakers were Assemblyman Dan Burling, and Orangeville Town Supervisor Susan May.   Habitat committee members also spoke which included Rev. Gary Witte from the Castile United Church of Christ,  Rev. Laurel Nelson from the Wyoming Presbyterian Church, and Sally Harding, all representing the Church Relations Committee.   Cindy Gadd of the  Construction Committee thanked all who put in time and labor that made this build possible.
The work of love that we do here helps to fulfil the American dream of owning a home and having a safe place for a family to live and grow.  We have made new friendships and learned to work together to make this day a reality.  Many volunteers took time out of their busy schedule for meetings, planning, building, and preparing meals for the workers.  Churches, businesses, schools, citizens, neighbors, coming together to support this cause and this family.  That is what makes this community and good community, a strong community, and a loving community.  Deep down we all understand the need to help one another whatever the need.  We can be proud to live here in Wyoming County, NY knowing we are creating stronger bonds with one another, doing God's will, and embracing those in need.  We don't know what tomorrow holds, but that person with the special need could be any one of us.  This was a great day for all.  We were able to turn this structure of wood and concrete into a home, and dedicate it to a deserving family - Ms. Jenny Bradley, her daughter April and her son Austin.

GRAND OPENING OF NEW HABITAT OFFICE

On May 6, 2008 Wyoming County dignitaries came together at 36 Exchange Street in Attica for a ribbon cutting ceremony. This event was to celebrate the grand opening of the new Habitat office. This space was donated by Bob Dunn. We have been in need of a space that would house all our paperwork as well as a place to hold our monthly meetings. Donations for the office includes a conference table and chairs, desk, file cabinets and a computer. It's good to have a tangible space to associate with the organization. A new sign hangs in the window with phone and website information.
Office visits are by appointment only.

                                        REFLECTIONS FROM A HABITAT HOMEOWNER
We asked the Beardslee family- one of our Habitat homeowners, what were two most important things they learned about homeownership.  With a few moments of thought they said, "responsibility and paying the bills on time."  They understand that with ownership there is much to be responsible for. Mowing the yard, keeping a clean house, maintenance and upkeep are just a few things that must be tended to.  Paying the bills on time is something that isn't always easy they stated, but they make every effort to do just that. It has been two years now and the Beardslee's are very happy to have been blessed with this home. They have planted trees, erected a flag pole, constructed a utility shed, and made that house a home.  We also asked them how they felt when they received the keys to their new home. Instantly Mr. Beardslee said they were so happy and filled with joy.  They have come along way since the days when they were living in less than adequate housing.  No broken windows, a good heating system and plenty of room for the family is something to be thankful for. They are also thankful that they are now making it on their own. "It's a great feeling to be living here," they said. One other point that they made mention of was the good neighbors that they had.  They have made new friends in the neighborhood which was important to them. Sounds like Habitat has achieved its goal.  With a success story like this, it drives us to continue this good work in our community. ***
