HABITAT NEWSLETTER ARTICLES AND INFO

July 13, 2008 started out to be a rainy day.  Dark clouds filled the sky and we all wondered what was to become of the rest of the day.  As we began setting up for Groundbreaking we had a sign of hope when the rain stopped and car after car of Habitat supporters began driving in.  There was much talk about the build.  Where would the house be placed?  When will construction start?  Who is the fortunate family?  Everyone was delighted to see we had made it to this milestone.  Our third build was soon to take place and there was much excitement and anticipation stirring within all.  This build will take place at 2372 Rt. 238 in the town of Orangeville.  There were approximately 40 people to take part in this Groundbreaking ceremony.  The program included the invocation by Rev. Gary Witte of the Castile United Church of Christ;  Opening remarks by co-president Nancy Hart;  Speakers Ms. Jane Robson- Rep. for Assemblyman Dan Burling;  Mr. Thomas Jacobs with Warsaw Valu Home Center;  Closing remarks by Bill Colvenbach-Habitat PR Chairman; and closing prayer by Rev. Laurel Nelson of the Wyoming Presbyterian Church.  It has been a little over two years since the completion of the last Habitat home in Warsaw.  We are very anxious to move forward on this project and help another family purchase decent affordable housing.  The new family was introduced as Ms. Jennie Bradley and her two children April and Austin. It certainly was an exciting moment for them.  Jennie will be working along with Habitat and will put in 500 hours of labor to help complete their home.  Many other laborers will be needed and if you would like to take part in this exciting project please contact us.  As the afternoon drew to a close, the sun was shining, the skies were blue and another family had hope for a bright future.  This day turned out fantastic after all !

GRAND OPENING OF NEW HABITAT OFFICE

On May 6, 2008 Wyoming County dignitaries came together at 36 Exchange Street in Attica for a ribbon cutting ceremony. This event was to celebrate the grand opening of the new Habitat office. This space was donated by Bob Dunn. We have been in need of a space that would house all our paperwork as well as a place to hold our monthly meetings. Donations for the office includes a conference table and chairs, desk, file cabinets and a computer. It's good to have a tangible space to associate with the organization. A new sign hangs in the window with phone and website information.
Office visits are by appointment only.

                    SPRINGVILLE HABITAT HELPS WYOMING COUNTY
Before the Springville Habitat affiliate disbanded earlier this year, they had provided housing for five families and had funds collected towards a projected build. Once they disbanded they needed to disburse their funds and property mortgages to other area affiliates. Wyoming County Habitat was fortunate to acquire two of these mortgages along with a portion of their building funds. The remaining mortgages and funds were made available to Allegany Habitat.
Thank you Springville volunteers for all of your hard work and many long hours invested in Habitat for Humanity. These funds will be put to good use.

                                        REFLECTIONS FROM A HABITAT HOMEOWNER
We asked the Beardslee family- one of our Habitat homeowners, what were two most important things they learned about homeownership.  With a few moments of thought they said, "responsibility and paying the bills on time."  They understand that with ownership there is much to be responsible for. Mowing the yard, keeping a clean house, maintenance and upkeep are just a few things that must be tended to.  Paying the bills on time is something that isn't always easy they stated, but they make every effort to do just that. It has been two years now and the Beardslee's are very happy to have been blessed with this home. They have planted trees, erected a flag pole, constructed a utility shed, and made that house a home.  We also asked them how they felt when they received the keys to their new home. Instantly Mr. Beardslee said they were so happy and filled with joy.  They have come along way since the days when they were living in less than adequate housing.  No broken windows, a good heating system and plenty of room for the family is something to be thankful for. They are also thankful that they are now making it on their own. "It's a great feeling to be living here," they said. One other point that they made mention of was the good neighbors that they had.  They have made new friends in the neighborhood which was important to them. Sounds like Habitat has achieved its goal.  With a success story like this, it drives us to continue this good work in our community. ***
