How Habitat Works

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no interest loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses.
Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor--sweat equity--into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.

To Become a Homeowner:

Helping persons in need to become homeowners is at the center of Habitat for Humanity's mission.  Our application process is designed to support our mission and our potential homeowners.  In general, here is how the process works:

1) Habitat for Humanity of Wyoming County receives a completed application (see below for information on obtaining an application)

2) Members of our Family Selection Committee set up an interview with the applicant(s).

3) At the interview, the Habitat program is discussed in detail.  The interviewers answer applicant questions and ask any questions we may have about the application.

4) The interviewers report back to the Family Selection Committee and the committee votes on whether or not to accept the application.

Application forms can be obtained from Marilyn Wilson (585-591-0836) or
Nancy Hart (585-591-0275).

The homeowner is chosen based on the below three criteria:
* the applicants' level of need,
* their willingness to become partners in the program
* and their ability to repay the no-profit, no-interest loan.
