Spanish-American War 1898 National

August 3,4,5, 2001

Jerseyville, Illinois

Colonel William H. Fulkerson Mansion

Colonel Fulkerson was the colonel of the 63rd Tennessee Regiment. The Colonel was badly wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga. After the war The Colonel and his wife , Cornelia Russell Fulkerson, left Rogersville, TN for property owned by the Russell family near Jerseyville, IL. On this property he built the beautiful 14 room Southern-style mansion which was to be name Hazel Dell. A frequent visitor to Hazel Dell was Charles M. Russell the famous Cowboy artist. The property was also known for being used as a hidout for Frank and Jesse James at times. Today the mansion sits on 60 acres of rolling farm land with a stream running through the center. It is here that the Spanish-American War National event for 2001 will be held. Fred and Brenda Nolan have graciously consented to allow USAWS the use of their property for this event. The property is rich in history as well as a collection of artifacts dating back to the Civil War time period. Colonel Fulkerson was also ask to raise a regiment of Southerners to fight in the Spanish-American War however the war ended before the regiment could be raised. Hazel Dell is also the home to a Civil War reenactment on Labor Day weekend. This is an ideal location for the Spanish-American War National as Jerseyville is only 40 miles north of St. Louis with its international airport. The 60 acres of land will give a variety of possibilities for battle scenarios.

The is the site of the US Military Camp. This is good flat ground with trees and a small steam to the back. Parking is only 30 to 40 yards from the camp. Drinking water and porta-potties will be close by.

This will be the site of our San Juan Heights. The land is a gently rolling hill located about 300 yards from the US camp. There will be a block house built on top as well as trench works complete with barbed wire and sand bags. The main camp for the Spanish will be a barracks style camp located near the mansion. Those that wish may camp in the trenches on "San Juan Hill".

Through the center of the property is a small stream and densely wooded area. This could be used as ground for the Las Guasimas fighting or pre Spanish-American War action with the Cubans.

All in all this is a great place for such an event. We need the support of all interested Spanish-American reenactors. Midwesterners here is your chance at a National event that is close by. We will look forward to seeing all of you.
