Tumble 180

Tumble 1/2 Way

When you have mastered your tumble 360's, it's time to add a twist to the tumble turn and go only 1/2 way around before turning around and standing back up. These are slightly more difficult than the 360 tumble turn since you have to stop your rotation and reverse it at 180 degrees but it's not really that difficult.

  1. Start out with your normal sit down like you're going into your 360 tumble.

  2. As your legs begin to swing around, the weight of your legs combined with the forward speed of the boat will have a tendency to spin your legs to the back of you and keep on going past 180. But here's where I have successfully used a tip from Ron Scarpa to help stop the rotation: tap your heel of the foot that's to the inside of the 180 (left heel if going counter-clockwise 180, right heel if going clockwise 180).

  3. By tapping your heel, the rotation should stop and start you back towards the front. Tapping your heel is not necessary but it gives you a good reference point to get to 180 degrees and to start the reverse rotation.

  4. From this point, simply raise the leading hip so it doesn't dig into the water, get back so that you're facing forward again and do your three point stance and stand up!

Tip: Handle position is important. Keep it fairly tight to your stomach/belly button during the entire rotation and make sure you shift it toward the hip leading the way from 90 degrees back to the front. This will help you to get the leading hip up as well.

Practice this both ways as they are separate tricks just as tumble turns each way are separate tricks.
