I painted this watercolor using pencil and India ink (back in my days as illustrator), for use by the Hambledon Press (book jacket cover for Hero and Exile: The Art of Old English Poetry, the collected essays of the late Stanley B. Greenfield, edited by George Brown); and it is with their permission that I reproduce it here. It represents the funeral ship referred to at the beginning of Beowulf:
Þær æt hyðe stod hringedstefna
isig ond utfus, æþelinges fær;
aledon þa leofne þeoden
beaga bryttan on bearm scipes
mærne be mæste.
