We plan to meet off our normal schedule on April 22nd (fourth Tuesday of the month) in the Gander Mountain store at 6:30 pm until 9 pm. We need to vacate the store by 9 pm, as that is when they close up shop. Hope you have the evening free. Also, feel free to bring and share munchy foods and or sodas, wine or beer. Carroll Wilcox will share his recent climbing adventures on Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa. Here, in Carroll's words, is what he plans to share at the meeting:April 2008 Meeting
I have a professionally produced DVD that has about 35 min of coverage (in the Kili chapter) of our group that includes background info on our
Journeys of Inspiration project, interviews, pictures of us on the mountain, and some audio updates by team members from the mountain that
I consider quite impressive. The DVD also includes 2 other optional chapters with a total of about 25 min of coverage including pictures and
movies from the safari and coverage of the Journeys of Solution Bulati School project. I don't know if the group would be interested in those 2
chapters or not since they don't deal with mountaineering at all.
I also have a CD that has scanned images of maps and route info that I would want to show before the DVD so everyone knows what routes we were
on and how the team was distributed across routes. I could also show a slideshow from the CD if desired but that would be a follow-up to the
DVD Kili chapter. The DVD primarily highlights the Lemosho route since they had the most people whereas I was on the Machame route but we all
got some coverage on the DVD.
So my general plan is to show background info on Kili from my CD, then show Chapter 1 from the DVD and possibly follow up with a Kili slideshow
of the Machame route from my CD.
The Kili climb for Lemosho and Rongai routes went from 2/25-3/3 (8 days) and Machame route 2/26-3/3 (7 days).
The purpose of the climb was explicitly to raise money for the American Cancer Society via the Journeys of Inspiration team. Journeys of
Solution is a separate 501c charitable foundation that used members of Journeys of Inspiration to deliver school supplies and support to the
Bulati School (Maasai children) near Ngorongoro Crater. There was also work with a local orphanage and funding for a relative of our chief
Tanzanian guide to complete his college education. The Climbing for Christ organization teamed up with Journeys of Inspiration for the Kili
climb and their primary mission was to work with local Lutheran churches to provide better equipment and care for the porters who work on
Kilimanjaro.
