Welcome

Welcome to the Rochester Boardgaming Society homepages. These pages are designed to give individuals an overview of who we are, what we are about, when and where we meet, why we play, and how to join in. If you are looking for more detailed information, click on the Contact Us link.

About The Rochester Boardgaming Society

The Rochester Boardgaming Society is a diverse group of individuals from all walks of life that share a deep interest in the spirit, challenge, and camaraderie found in boardgaming. Games of all types make an appearance at our meets; from card games, to 'Eurogames', to family-oriented boardgames, to more traditional strategic wargames.

Our current membership numbers 145, and we are always looking for new opponents to challenge us. And in case you are wondering, the group itself has no dues or fees associated with it.

Games People Play

The members (or RochGamers as they are sometimes called) play a wide variety of games. You can see a listing of some of them on the Member Games pages.

Some of the following games were played at recent meets: Command and Colors Ancients, Memoir '44, Settlers of Catan, Stratomatic Football, Power Grid, Race for the Galaxy, Combat Commander, and Pacific Typhoon, among others. You can read how some of them went on the After Action Reports pages.

Typically there are between 20 and 30 members present throughout the day with games ranging from traditional family and card games to strategic and tactical wargames to the rapidly growing "Eurogames" category.

What's a Eurogame?

The Eurogame is a collective term for a game that tends to be more abstract in theme and more family oriented. These games are typically not sold in the retail mass-market stores, but through specialty shops instead. Many were developed in Europe (mainly in Germany), and are written in foreign languages. That does not detract from them in any way, however, as US publishers often include English text on the components and rules.

Many of these games have a fixed ending point, and usually take 1-2 hours (less once you learn the games). Some also include mechanisms to keep you involved in the game when it is not your turn (such as trading, negotiating, etc) - the result is more involvement and less down-time during play. Luck is a much lower factor in many of these types of games, but still plays a small role.

Where can I learn more about these games?

First, check out our Links page. Then visit our Yahoo Group and post a question. Membership is free and open to all. And you can visit Boardgamegeek to learn about the games themselves.
