I was going through some old pictures and came across some shots of bears.  These pictures are from 2001.  They were taken 2 different days.  We think it was the same bear but don't know that for sure.  We had a visit from a bear a couple of weeks ago but they've been pretty scarce around here.  That's the way we like it.

This was the first time the bear visited us.  It was quite late at night.  We woke up when we heard the noise of the feeders banging against the pipe.  I stepped out onto the patio and snapped a quick picture with the little camera we keep on the counter.  As you can see, the flash didn't have enough power to fully illuminate the scene.   After the night time visit from the bear, this is what we found when we went out the next morning.  The feeders that normally hang from the top of the pole were in pieces all over the yard.

This is the second visit we had from the bear.  This time he came at 8 AM on a Saturday morning.  Becky's mom was visiting and was sleeping on the bed in the living room right in front of the big picture window.  It was quite a shock for her to wake up and see a bear wandering around the yard. After his first visit, we started taking the feeders in at night so they wouldn't be destroyed again if we had another bear visitor.  It's a good thing we did.  Here he is checking out the holder where he found  feeders on his previous visit.

This is just another shot of the bear roaming around the yard looking for food.   Here it is after the suet that we have in a holder for the woodpeckers and nuthatches.  This was the last thing that it tried.  This particular suet had hot pepper in it.  The bear pulled it down, walked to the end of the house, sat down and chomped on the holder and everything.  He spit it out, shook his head and headed north.  That was the last we saw of him for a couple of years.

This is my favorite picture of the bear.  At this point it's about 3 feet away from the window and is looking up at the spot where we used to have a stick-on sunflower seed feeder.  I have to admit that I was a little nervous about only a single pane of glass between me and the bear. When he realized that there wasn't a feeder on the window, he just sat down and looked in at me for a minute before getting up and heading for the suet holder.
